Thames Women win LHA London Cup
THAMES Handball Club women won the pre-season LHA London Cup competition after a thrilling series of matches at Leyton SCORE Centre on Saturday 24th September.
The cup was hotly contested between Thames H.C., Olympia H.C. and London G.D. as the teams warmed up for national and European competitions.
Thames played Olympia in their first match and led by 2-3 goals for the majority of the match until with minutes to spare, Olympia managed to level the score and edge ahead to win 14-13.
Thames’ second game against London GD turned out to be the deciding clash as their opponents had comfortably beaten Olympia 18 – 13. With new signings in each team some nervousness was evident although both teams created clear chances.
In the end it was Thames who managed to control the match better with Nikoletta Papp scoring from the back court over London GD’s defence and Maria Kourdoulos hitting the net from the wing three times. Live Kolstad Kvalsvik was top scorer for Thames with five goals, followed by Maria Kourdoulos and Asta Slezeviciene scoring three each.
Congratulations to Thames H.C. who won the LHA Cup on goal difference to become champions for the first time since 2009. Thanks to the referees and officials without whom the event could not have taken place and to the teams and supporters who contributed to making the event a success.
