Twelve months ago the Handball community was eagerly awaiting the start of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic year and enjoying the memories of GB Women beating Angola in their first international match at the Copper Box in front of an invited audience to the London Cup.

One month later Angola finished 8th in the International Handball Federation’s (IHF) World Championships to prove the GB performance was one of quality against world class opposition and that with the right preparation GB Handball teams can be successful on the world stage.

Twelve months later eagerness and excitement has reached new levels as the achievements of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games,  schools, clubs and GB Handball teams confirm that Handball has made its mark in the UK and is here to stay.

Handball gets a boost with Sport England investment

The sport that caught the nation’s imagination this summer, has secured £1.2 million of funding to help it capitalise on the interest generated by the Olympic Games

Across Northern Europe handball is a popular sport played at professional level, but in England it is still in its infancy with only a few thousand regular players. It has to compete for indoor space with several more established sports and, while the attention generated by the Games is welcome, the small governing body, England Handball, does not currently have the infrastructure to ensure supply meets demand.

Over the next four years, funding worth £1.2 million will help to develop the governing body and the sport.

Handball was meant to be boring, pointless and a niche sport unsuitable for the footballing masses (me included).

But something happened last night in the so-called Copper Box over Stratford way; handball won some new fans.

14 Men’s Handball players selected to Team GB

The British Olympic Association (BOA) has announced today the 14 male handball players that will represent   Team GB at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Handball made its Olympic debut   in 1936, but has only been a regular fixture at the Games since 1972.  Team   GB has taken the opportunity to use the home nation allocation to enter their   first ever handball teams and, following the announcement two weeks ago of   their female counterparts, both the men and women’s squads are now selected   to make their Olympic debuts in London.
