Thames Women win LHA London Cup

THAMES Handball Club women won the pre-season LHA London Cup competition after a thrilling series of matches at Leyton SCORE Centre on Saturday 24th September.

The cup was hotly contested between Thames H.C., Olympia H.C. and London G.D. as the teams warmed up for national and European competitions.

Thames played Olympia in their first match and led by 2-3 goals for the majority of the match until with minutes to spare, Olympia managed to level the score and edge ahead to win 14-13.

Thames’ second game against London GD turned out to be the deciding clash as their opponents had comfortably beaten Olympia 18 – 13. With new signings in each team some nervousness was evident although both teams created clear chances.

In the end it was Thames who managed to control the match better with Nikoletta Papp scoring from the back court over London GD’s defence and Maria Kourdoulos hitting the net from the wing three times.  Live Kolstad Kvalsvik was top scorer for Thames with five goals, followed by Maria Kourdoulos and Asta Slezeviciene scoring three each.

Congratulations to Thames H.C. who won the LHA Cup on goal difference to become champions for the first time since 2009.  Thanks to the referees and officials without whom the event could not have taken place and to the teams and supporters who contributed to making the event a success.

Results: Thames 13 Olympia 14, London GD 18 Olympia 13, Thames 13 London GD 9.

London Schools Achieve National Success

Handball teams from London schools enjoyed unprecedented success at the U13 National Schools Championships held in Wolverhampton in June.

Harris Boy’s Academy, East Dulwich and Woolwich Polytechnic School travelled to Wolverhampton to play the final stages of the competition having won through the South of England Tournament.

Both teams performed to a very high standard in the national finals and extra time had to be played between the London teams in the final match to decide the winners of the national title.

In the end it was Harris Academy that ran out winners 9-7 and the team was congratulated by Mike Briers Chairman of England Handball Association on their outstanding achievement and also for the style in which they played.

In addition to the trophy the winning team were presented with tickets to attend the Test event for the London 2012 Handball competition which will take place at the Handball arena in the Olympic Park in November.
